A student destroyed the MiraCosta College sign at the Barnard entrance of the college at 7:45 a.m. this morning when the driver collided with it coming up the hill. MCC PD and the Oceanside Fire Department were on the scene within minutes.

According to Officer David Santos, of MCC PD, the driver claimed to have swerved because of a small animal in the road. Driver’s side airbags deployed from the impact. The student who was driving a white four-door  Hyundai Elantra, was taken to the hospital by Oceanside paramedics.

The driver suffered a laceration to the face and complained of shoulder pain. The student should be released by this evening.

“I don’t know how fast the driver was going. The student said they were doing the speed limit. I am just starting to investigate it now,” stated Santos.
