People who attend college have experienced meeting new people, signing up for classes and being a part of school activities. But what can students do to make their college experience better? Studying abroad gives students a great opportunity to attend school in a different country for a semester. By joining the Study Abroad program, students are given the chance to learn about different cultures, meet new people around the world, learn new languages, and still be able to complete their education.
Have you ever been to Europe? Are you dying to go? MiraCosta College offers their very own study abroad program as students are given the opportunity to travel to Barcelona, Spain in the spring of 2017, and London, England in the fall of 2017. Both will be 90-day trips, so no visa is required. MiraCosta College was able to establish a study abroad program by being a part of an association of colleges called the Southern California Foothills Consortium. “We’ve been a part of this consortium for a very long time,” said MCC Study Abroad coordinator Mia Scavone.
In order for students to join the Study Abroad program, they must complete 12 units before applying for the program and have a 2.5 GPA or higher. Once students reach their destination, they must maintain full-time student status, and the classes they take must be UC and CSU transferable. So students are able to complete the general education requirements that are needed to transfer to a four-year university while having the experience of living overseas.
Now, some students may wonder how they can afford to study abroad. To answer that question, students must fill out the Federal Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to see if they’re eligible for grants. There are also scholarships available for students interested in the program, such as the Gilman Scholarship for Study Abroad, the MiraCosta College Wright Smith Family Study Abroad Scholarship, and the MiraCosta College Spring 2017, Dorothy Pat McCoury Study Abroad Scholarship. There are many ways for students to fund their education and traveling expenses.
So what are you waiting for? Would you rather fall asleep listening to another boring history lecture? Or would like to learn about how Constitutional Monarchy occurred in the United Kingdom by visiting Buckingham Palace in London? Would you like to learn the history of the creation of Sagrada Família by seeing the Sagrada Família in Barcelona, Spain? There’s so much the world has to offer you and studying abroad offers you that experience. By studying abroad, history comes to life right before your eyes. So go ahead and plan your trip. Make your college experience an adventurous one.
